Mas Neuf is a place - like other "mases" - which has been "visited" by people way back in history. In the vineyards
have been found coins from Roman time with the signature VOLC. On the
logo of the domain and at the labels you see this coin.
Through the 18th century when pilgrims on their
route to Santiago de Compostella passed Saint-Gilles Mas
Neuf was near their walking trail and therefore the mas was used as a place to
rest by the pilgrims and consequently a chapel was established. A century later
the chapel was transformed into a cellar for ageing wines. This element of history
is the background for the the name Compostella for a line of the wines from the
estate.
Luc Baudet tells at his website about his way to become
a winegrower and finaly purchased Mas Neuf in 2000.

----
I have a lifelong passion for food and wine. As far as I can remember, the quality and variety of meals was a major concern
for my mother ... and the result was the subject of much debate and lively tasting.
After finishing school, I took a course in Agricultural Engineering with specialization in Food Science. I had the opportunity to work in parallel on several projects on the taste of AOC cheeses and Audit General Agricultural Competition, which are
tasting each year the best wines and cheeses from France.
Armed with a fresh graduate, I went 18 months to Ireland which allowed me to discover secrets of perfume from the whiskey aging in oak barrels, and I honed
my taste for assemblies and tasting.
Then 8 years of working in multinational companies allowed me to understand the interrelationships between quality, symbolic value of food and consumer perception. Then I wanted to take a distance with the constraints that became less and less compatible with my personal and human aspirations.
We have, with some good wine enthusiasts, travelled over 20,000 km in all the southern vineyards, to find a winery that fits our aspirations. After several unsuccessful attempts, Mas Neuf brought together all the votes and we appropriated this beautiful land. Since three vintages and after returning on the benches of the school of Viticulture and Enology at
l'Agro Montpellier, I now take care of the destiny of my domain.
