Échansonnerie des Papes - The brotherhood of wine

The brotherhood of wine in Chateauneuf du Pape was founded in 1967 on the initiative of Philippe Dufays (Domaine Nalys). Its officiall name is "Échansonnerie des Papes". Échanson is the French word for cupbearer. The name refers to the men who served the wines for the popes and his men in Avignon in the 14th century. On the homepage of the brotherhood they say it this way
"The châteauneuf Brotherhood was founded by Dr. Dufays for the purpose of paying an everlasting tribute to glorious times past. The ceremonies of the Brotherhood are inspired by the very history of the Papal Court when the Cup-Bearers - just like today - served our wines to prominent guests."

The brotherhood consists of three various categories of members:

- Grands Échansons dignitaires.

- Camériers et Grands Camériers.

- Membres d'honneur

Twice a year is arranged a ceremonial party with enthronement of new members (Membres d'honneur) in the cellar at the pope's castle.
These new members are not local wine growers but different people from around the the world who in some way or another has earned the honour to be enthroned.

The ceromony of enthronement

The enthroned members of honour receive 3 things,
a key to the pope's wine cellar, a diploma and a magnum bottle of Chateauneuf du Pape - without a label.

To the ceremony of entronement is served a
candlelight dinner and there are speeches, songs, dances and of course the famous red and white wines of Chateauneuf du Pape which contribute to creating a joyous atmosphere.

In 2005 Paul Coulon (to the right) was succeeded as president of the brotherhood
by Francoise Bérard (to the left). Paul Coulon continues as vice-president.
