Domaine du Pere Pape The
Mayard family has been winemakers
for 5 generations. Didier, Françoise (the winemaker) and Béatrice
manage 43 hectares in the Chateauneuf du Pape appellation with
a production of about 140,000 bottles including 10,000 to 15,000 bottles of
white. 3 different cuvées of Chateauneuf du Papes are produced: Clos du Calvaire, Domaine du Père Pape and Crau de Ma Mère. Clos du
Calvaire was founded by the grandparents of the owners today Marie Louise and Alphonse Mayard
who were
pioneers of sales in bottle.
Their sales register (dated
1923) shows a large commercial activity. Chateauneuf du Pape Domaine du Père Pape (65.000 bottles) is based on vines from all the different plots of the estate. It's made from 65% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 15% Cinsault. This cuvée is aged in foudres (1/3) or in cement tanks for 12-18 months. Chateauneuf du Pape
Crau de Ma Mere (25.000 bottles) comes from a selection of very old vines located on the "Crau". One of the plots was planted after the
phylloxera outbreak of 1866.
The
owners' father named the wine in memory of his mother. Until the 2003 vintage, this cuvée was a blend of 80 % Grenache, 10% Syrah and
10% Mourvèdre. Since the 2004 and 2005 vintages more Mourvèdre have been used,
up to 20%, from younger vines. Cotes
