The Mathieu family have been present in Chateauneuf du Pape for 4 centuries.

The property owns 20 ha. AOC Chateauneuf du Pape and 4 ha. Cotes du Rhone. The Cotes du Rhone fields are in Le Gres and those of Chateauneuf du Pape are divided in 50 parcels. Quote Parker: "I imagine that the harvest strategy at this estate is not unlike planning a major military invasion."

All 13 grape varieties are present: 85% Grenache, 5% Mourvedre, 3% Syrah, 2% Muscardin, 1% Clairette, 1% Counoise, 1% Cinsault, 0,5% Picpoul, 0,5% Bourboulenc, 0,4% Vaccarese, 0,2% Roussanne og 0,2% Picardan for the red wines and for the whites: 50% Clairette, 40% Grenache Blanc, 5% Picpoul og 5% Bourboulenc.
The average age of the vines is 65 year.
The vinification for the reds is traditional: long maceration period and ageing in foudres The Special cuvées are partly aged in in barriques. All reds are bottled unfiltered.

A granduncle of the owner today was the well known winegrower and poet Anselme Mathieu. Together with some other poets from Provence among them Frédéric Mistral and Alphonse Daudet he founded an association, Félibres. The purpose was to maintain the language and the customs of Provence. On the labels of his wine were different poems. The most famous was "Lou vin de castou noù souno la voio, emai lou cant, emai l'amour, emai la joio" (wine from Châteauneuf brings courage, melody, love and joy). The names of the two special cuvées refer to this ancestor.
