Guigal founded the firm in 1946. Marcel Guigal took over in 1961 when his
father got an illness rendering him blind. Today the 3. generation Philippe Guigal
is a partner of his father. Philippe is an educated oenologist
The family owns 45 ha, vineyards
in the northern Rhone, including famous parcels in Côte Rôtie
and Hermitage, from where expensive single parcel wines are made.
The mainpart of the production in the cellars in Ampuis is negociant
wines, and among them a range of wines from the southern Rhone
Guigal also control two other negociant
firms in Rhone J. Vidal Fleury (since 1984) and Ferraton
et Fils, both of them run as independant firms.
The use of barrels is so big (4000) that an own cooperage at the estate was
created in 2003.
The cooperage works in partnership with the cooperage
in Chagny managed by Seguin Moreau.
Wines from the southern Rhone:
Chateauneuf du Pape
80% Grenache, 10% Syrah, 5% Mourvedre and 5% other varieties.
Aged for 2 years in barrels. Production about 185.000
bt.
Gigondas
60% Grenache, 30% Mourvedre and 10% Syrah.
Aged for 2 years in barrels by which ½ are new. Production about 120.000
bt.
Tavel
50% Grenache, 30% Cinsault, 10% Clairette and 5% Syrah.
Production about 30.000
bt.
Cotes du Rhone
50% Syrah, 40% Grenache and 10% Mourvedre.
Aged for 1 year in barrels. Production
about 3.000.000 bt.
Cotes du Rhone Rosé
50% Grenache, 40% Cinsault, 10% Mourvedre/Syrah. Production
about 200.000 bt.
Cotes du Rhone Blanc
55% Viognier, 20% Roussanne, 10% Marsanne, 10% Clairette and 5%
Bourboulenc.
Production about 250.000 bt.
