The domain was established early 2015. The two brothers André, Jérôme who together have driven Domaine Mathieu, decided to split the domain.
The Mathieu family has grown wine for centuries in Chateauneuf du Pape, and has previously been located 21, Rue Commandant Lemaitre. The old cellar here was used for ageing the wines from Domaine Mathieu until 1976.
Domaine de Saje is now based on approx. 1/3 of the vineyards from Domaine Mathieu and covers 6.5 ha of Chateauneuf du Pape and 2 ha. of Cotes du Rhone.
All vines are 80
-years or older.
The first
vintage from the new domain was 2015.

Wines 2018

Chateauneuf du Pape
2016: 80% Grenache and 20% of other allowed varieties.

Chateauneuf du Pape 1600
2016: 60% Counoise, 25% Grenache, 15% other varieties. Debut 2016.
(Counoise constitutes a total of less than 0.5% of the varieties in the appellation, and most occurs on mixed-planted parcels, as in the case of this domain, which, however has a larger proportion of this variety used for this interesting cuvée)

Chateauneuf du Pape Marquis Anselme Mathieu
2016: 82% Grenache, 6% Mourvedre and 1% of other allowed varieties.

Chateauneuf du Pape Blanc
2017: 50% Clairette, 40% Grenache Blanc, 5% Picpoul and 5% Bourboulenc.

Cotes du Rhone
2017: 55% Grenache and 45% Syrah.

Tasting room in the historical cellar

The cement tanks are painted on the wall, but there are taps below which lead to the right tanks somewhere under the floor of the machine house behind the wall.
In very old basements
you find similar "hidden" fermentation tanks
- it works fine.
